​מקור ראשי התיבות נ"ב הוא בתעתיק ראשי תיבות לועזיים n.b. הנהוגים בסוף מכתב, המציינים את הביטוי הלטיני nota bene, שפירושו "עיין היטב". בעברית זכו ראשי התיבות לפרשנויות שונות, ביניהן "נוסף בזאת", "נזכרתי בסוף", "נזכרתי במשהו/בדבר". ראשי תיבות לטיניים נוספים לאותה מטרה הם p.s. – "פוסט סקריפטום" = "אחרי הכתוב".

בהשאלה, משמשות ראשי התיבות לא רק להוספת דבר שנשכח מן הכותב בגוף הדברים אלא גם כדרך להוסיף הערה שאין לה קשר ישיר לגוף המכתב, ככזו המאירה באופן אחר את תוכנו.

בסופו של דבר הוחלט כי נ"ב יהיה הקיצור של "נוסף בסוף" עם קשר לכתוב במכתב ואם לאו

(יעקב שוויקה, רב מלים הצעיר).
