​המילה חֹפֶשׁ מופיעה בתנ"ך רק פעם אחת (יחזקאל כז, כ). כיום זו המילה הרגילה לציון מצב של שחרור וחוסר הגבלה.
חברותיה: דרור – המקראית וחירות – מלשון חז"ל משמשות בעיקר בהקשרים חגיגיים.
המקפידים בלשונם מבחינים בין חופש – מושג כללי ומופשט, ובין חופשה – תקופה פנויה מעבודה או מלימודים: חופשת הקיץ, חופשת מולדת, ואפילו חופשת מחלה. מהארמית שאלנו את הפגרה לציון תקופה מוגדרת שבה מוסד כלשהו מפסיק את פעולתו, כגון פגרת הכנסת. ועוד יש לנו נופש – חופשה שיש עמה בילוי והרפיה לגוף ולנפש, שכן נָפַשׁ פירושו נָח, כאמור "וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי שָׁבַת וַיִּנָּפַשׁ" (שמות לא, יז).
